The Enchanted Wood

There are plenty of wonderful woodland walks around us here in Cornwall, but this particular jaunt took me down into the woods on the Trelowarren Estate on the Lizard Peninsula. Have any of you read The Enchanted Wood by Enid Blyton? It was my favourite book as a child – I even re-read it when I was at university (as a distraction from the rather more taxing Middlemarch). Today, as I wandered through the chocolate-orange of Autumn, I imagined that behind every fallen, mossy log or scampering up high in the tangled canopy, were Silky, Moon-Face, Mister Watzisname and the funny old Saucepan Man. The magic of childhood lives on!
